Trencher Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE V50 TRENCHER AND V60 TRENCHER?

The V50 Trencher features a shark-style tooth on its 70/30 Combo chain, which is characterized by being taller and thinner compared to the shark-style tooth found on the V60 Trencher’s 50/50 Terminator chain. Additionally, the V50’s shark-style tooth configuration includes more shark teeth and fewer cup cutter teeth.

The V50 Trencher is compatible with standard flow skid steers (15-25 gpm) and the V60 Trencher has motor options compatible with standard flow (15-25 gpm) and high flow skid steers (25-42 gpm).

WHAT’S THE BENEFIT OF AN ANTI-BACK FLEX CHAIN?

In soft digging conditions, a standard digging chain excels. However, in compact or rocky soil, its design may lead to backflex. Backflex causes teeth to rotate backwards, which compromises the proper digging angle and reduces trenching speed. To overcome this challenge, the Anti-Backflex digging chain is purposefully engineered for demanding digging conditions.

With closely spaced sides in each link, this specialized chain ensures a seamless connection as it leaves the sprocket, forming a robust digging channel. This innovative design guarantees that each digging tooth maintains the correct digging angle, providing not only superior trenching speed but also superior performance in challenging soil conditions.

WHAT MOTOR FLOW RATE SHOULD I PURCHASE?

The trencher motor flow rate should be optimized to match the skid steer’s flow rate, which is measured in gallons per minute (GPM). Running a higher GPM than the trencher motor is rated for can potentially damage the motor and will void the warranty. All Virnig skid steer attachments with hydraulic motors have a zero overflow rating to prevent premature failure.

HOW MUCH SLACK SHOULD BE IN THE TRENCHER CHAIN?

Typically, no less than 1” and no more than 3”.

CAN I RUN THE TRENCHER IN REVERSE?

Yes, it can run in reverse if needed. This can often help dislodge a rock or debris stuck in the chain. If the operator’s detent is not to their liking, they can swap couplers and change the direction of flow to match their preference.

WHAT KIND OF OIL IS USED IN THE SPINDLE?

All Virnig trenchers use 80W/90 gear oil in their spindles. Before each use and after 10 hours of operation the oil should be checked and added as needed.

WHICH DIGGING DEPTH SHOULD I BUY?

Virnig offers three boom sizes, 36”, 48”, and 60”. Your trenching needs will be the main factor to decide the depth needed. Note the boom can be changed out later to change the depth. A new boom and chain would need to be purchased or chain links added to fit the new boom length.

IS HIGH FLOW BETTER THAN STANDARD FLOW?

Comparing standard flow and high flow, generally speaking, higher GPM is better. Higher GPM provides more torque which allows the trencher to continue turning the chain and stall less. The best results will be yielded when pairing the trencher motor with the skid steer’s optimal flow rate. For more information, contact your local dealer or Virnig at 800-648-2408.

WHICH CHAIN SHOULD I GET?

Each chain works best in different soil types. The wrong chain type can make a great trenching unit perform poorly.

This chart shows Virnig’s chains along with suggested soil usage guidelines.

NOTE: These suggestions are provided for reference purposes only and only basic categories are shown. Contact Virnig for precise matching of chain assemblies with particular ground conditions or any specific application requirements.

Single Standard – Cup tooth every other station. Works best in soft to medium soils. Also works well in sticky soil since there is more space between teeth to limit clogging/clumping.

Double Standard – Cup tooth every station. Works best in soft to medium soils. Also works well in sandy, dry soils. The additional cup teeth keep material moving out of the trench instead of falling back in.

50/50 Terminator – 50% shark-style teeth with embedded carbide inserts and 50% cup teeth. Works best in soft to hard soils, as well as rocky soils. The Terminator chain is the “catch-all” style. If you will be working in both soft and rocky soils this is the chain to get. If working in primarily one or the other a more specialized chain may work better, but the Terminator chain works in almost any soil type.

50/50 Rock and Frost 50% cup teeth and 50% replaceable, rotating carbide tip rock teeth. Works best in rocky soils, as well as frost. The carbide tips spin as they hit rocks for even wear and increased longevity. If the soil to be trenched requires going through and breaking up smaller rocks this is the chain to use.

WHAT WIDTH CHAINS DOES VIRNIG OFFER?

Virnig offers 6”, 8”, 10”, and 12” wide chains in a number of configurations. See the spec table for specific options.

CAN I GET REPLACEMENT TEETH & PARTS FOR MY CHAIN?

Yes. There are replacement teeth and various parts available for all chains Virnig offers.

WHY IS MY NEW CHAIN STRETCHING SO MUCH?

Stretching of new trencher chains is normal and should be expected. Most chains will experience approximately 80% of their stretching within the first 20% of their useable life. It will be necessary to tension the chain appropriately and may be necessary to remove a chain link in order to keep proper tension.

Virnig Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT TYPE OF ATTACHMENT INTERFACE/HOOKUP DOES VIRNIG USE?

All Virnig skid steer attachments are manufactured with a universal mount to fit most skid steer loaders. The mounting frame is built to ISO 24410 and SAE J2513 standards.

All Virnig mini skid steer attachments are manufactured with a Toro®/mini universal mount, Bobcat® mount, or ASV® mount.

WHAT IS THE SETUP TIME FOR A VIRNIG ATTACHMENT?

Most Virnig attachments are ready to work right off the pallet.

To minimize setup time, Virnig Manufacturing requires the machine brand and model to be listed in every order for attachments with hydraulic components. This ensures proper hose length, routing, and coupler sizing. In addition, all hydraulic Virnig Attachments are tested for leaks and proper operation before leaving the factory. There may be specific scenarios in which additional setup time will be required.

HOW QUICKLY CAN I GET REPLACEMENT PARTS?

WHY DOES VIRNIG USE NITROSTEEL® CYLINDER RODS?

Virnig uses NitroSteel® cylinder rods because they are a superior performing alternative to chrome plating. The finish offers improved corrosion resistance and better grease retention.

Chrome plated cylinder rods can flake or pit and destroy the seals or other internal components; resulting in downtime and expensive repairs.

A NitroSteel® rod will perform better and increase the service life of a cylinder, making it the cost-effective choice. Learn more about the benefits of the NitroSteel® process.
