V20 Mini Skid Steer Rotating Log Grapple Frequently Asked Questions

WHICH MINI SKID STEER MOUNTS ARE AVAILABLE?

There are three mini mounts to choose from:

  • Toro®/Mini-Universal
  • Bobcat®
  • ASV®
  • Universal skid steer quick tach mount not available.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PROBLEMS THE MINI SKID STEER LOG GRAPPLE SOLVES?

Mini skid steer rotating log grapple solutions address issues related to physical strain, efficiency, time savings, consistency and safety in tree care operations, ultimately contributing to improved productivity and job satisfaction for tree care company owners and their crews.

  • Tree work is challenging, physically demanding and causes employee fatigue, even with proper lifting techniques. A mini skid with a log grapple reduces fatigue by handling heavy lifting, creating a better working environment. This results in happier and more efficient crews.
  • Mini skid steer log grapples shorten the tree removal process, saving time and labor costs. A single mini skid steer with a log grapple can save an hour’s work for each crew member, leading to 3-4x time and labor cost savings. A job with four crew members, which would’ve taken 8 hours without a mini skid log grapple, can now be completed in 2-3 hours!
  • Some tree work jobsites are in confined spaces (like urban areas) which aren’t accessible with a skid steer or excavator. A mini skid with a skid log grapple can weave through trees in a forest, drive through narrow gates and other tight spaces.
  • Larger machinery can quickly and easily damage grass and lawn, which would need to be repaired. This increases cost and time at the jobsite. Mini skid steers cause minimal ground disturbance, preserving grass and the surrounding landscape during tree work operations.
  • Manual labor is inconsistent. A log grapple has never called in sick! It shows up every day, is consistent and doesn’t complain. It ensures a reliable and consistent workflow.
  • Manually hauling branches to a wood chipper and manually feeding a chipper is slow and labor intensive. Mini skid log grapples are used to feed chippers, eliminating the need for manual hauling. This makes ground work more efficient and less labor intensive.
  • If the tree service company didn’t have a mini skid, crews would need to cut trees and branches into smaller pieces and then move it to the chipper in a wheelbarrow or a cart, which is extremely labor intensive.
  • Manually stacking logs, rocks and wood on a trailer or pile takes time and is labor intensive. Log grapples enable operators to quickly stack and unload wood and various objects onto and off trailers or onto burn piles. It allows operators to stack logs vertically or horizontally as well.
WHY IS A HOLDING VALVE IMPORTANT?

When hauling logs or objects, the cylinder connected to the jaw will lose slowly bleed open which reduces grip. This results in an operator potentially losing a load during transport. Operators are often driving backwards while dragging logs, so they can’t keep an eye on the grapple and load.

To prevent a log from sliding out of the jaws, the operator needs to re-engage the hydraulics to get a firm grip on the object which can slow operating speed.

Virnig’s standard holding valve prevents the jaws from drifting open during operation, which means the load you’re hauling is firmly held by the jaws.

WHY DOES VIRNIG USE NITROSTEEL® CYLINDER RODS?

Virnig uses NitroSteel® cylinder rods because they are a superior performing alternative to chrome plating. The finish offers improved corrosion resistance and better grease retention.

Chrome plated cylinder rods can flake or pit and destroy the seals or other internal components; resulting in downtime and expensive repairs.

A NitroSteel® rod will perform better and increase the service life of a cylinder, making it the cost-effective choice. Learn more about the benefits of the NitroSteel® process.

ARE HOSES INCLUDED WITH THIS GRAPPLE?

The hoses, couplers*, cylinder(s), and fittings are included with all Virnig skid steer and mini skid steer grapples.

*Couplers not included with Compact Tractor grapples.
