Salt Spreader Frequently Asked Questions

WHICH AUGER OPTION SHOULD I CHOOSE — SALTSAVER OR MAXCOVER?

The SaltSaver auger is for lighter application rates. It’s ideal if you’re focused on pretreating or want to use less salt overall. The MaxCover auger applies more material per acre, making it a better fit for deicing, higher travel speeds or when heavier coverage is needed.

Here’s a quick example when traveling at 5 mph:

  • SaltSaver applies about 500 lbs/acre (bulk salt)
  • MaxCover applies about 800 lbs/acre (bulk salt)

If you’re doing both pretreating and de-icing on the same job, some users recommend going with the SaltSaver. It’s more flexible, and you can always slow down ground speed slightly to increase the amount applied when needed, without changing augers.

Also, if you’re using sand instead of salt, multiply the rates by 1.25 to account for the heavier material.

HOW WELL DOES THE SPREADER APPLY SAND OR SALT/SAND MIXES?

The system delivers a nice, consistent spread pattern, even with heavier materials like sand or salt/sand blends. The augers with chains help keep material flowing consistently.

CAN I CONTROL THE SPREAD RATE OR SPREAD WIDTH?

Yes, you have control over both. Most modern loaders allow you to adjust hydraulic flow directly from the joystick, which lets you fine-tune the spread rate and width on the fly.

From the factory, the spreader is set to throw about 15 feet to each side. Operators have reported dialing that down to as little as 4 feet using the loader’s joystick flow control, which is great for tighter spaces or when you want to reduce salt usage.

Also, you can manually adjust the flow control valve on the spreader’s hydraulic manifold. This does require tools, and it allows you to set a new baseline for both spread width and rate. Keep in mind the application rate and width adjust together. More hydraulic flow going to the motors means more material and a wider throw; less flow means less material and a narrower path.

SHOULD I PRE-TREAT THE SALT BEFORE LOADING IT INTO TOTES?

It’s recommended to pre-treat salt with a magnesium chloride based liquid to prevent clumping and keeps salt from freezing in the totes.

HOW DURABLE ARE THE TOTES IN COLD WEATHER?

They hold up extremely well and they can even be stacked two high. The poly used in the totes is a high-impact, cold-weather-rated material designed specifically for outdoor use in winter. Unlike standard plastics that can crack or get brittle in freezing temps, this poly stays tough even in subzero conditions and will never rust.

HOW WELL DO THE SPREADER AND TOTES HANDLE WET BULK SALT?

The system handles wet bulk salt well and the totes protect the salt from the elements. The dual augers with chain agitation help keep material flowing. Pre-treating salt with liquids like magnesium chloride also helps prevent freezing and keeps material flowing smoothly. However, very wet or frozen salt can cause clogs, so it’s best to avoid loading salt that’s overly wet or frozen solid. Regular maintenance and cleaning help ensure reliable operation.

WON’T USING THE SALT SPREADER CAUSE MY SKID STEER TO CORRODE?

Not if you take care of it with proper cleaning and maintenance. Since the salt is held in durable poly bins and spreaders away from the machine itself, it greatly reduces direct salt exposure. Like with any equipment used in winter, regular cleaning and maintenance are key to preventing corrosion and keeping your skid steer running strong season after season. If you don’t wash it regularly, you’ll have issues.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF USING DUAL SPINNERS INSTEAD OF SINGLE?

Dual spinners let you cover more ground in fewer passes and apply more material per pass. That means faster coverage and better results in less time.

With a single spinner, especially on truck salters, you often get an uneven pattern. One side might throw 15 feet, the other barely 5. This forces extra passes and overlapping to avoid missing spots.

Dual spinners throw evenly across the full width and apply twice as much salt as a single spinner. With dual spinners, you’re not guessing or doubling back, you’re done in one clean shot. More coverage. More material. Less time.

HOW DOES THIS SALT SPREADER COMPARE TO A TRUCK SALTER?

There are several big advantages:

Precision and Speed
With dual spinners, you get an even, consistent spread about 15 feet out to each side. This makes it easy to cover all areas precisely, including tight spots like carts or alleyways. Plus, you cut out a lot of drive time, sometimes saving up to an hour by not having to drive the truck back and forth. Labor is typically the largest end of year cost, so any time you save directly adds to savings.

Better Visibility and Safety
The spinners are right in front of you, so you can see exactly where the salt is going. This gives you confidence and makes it safer, especially in busy or tight areas with people and kids. Unlike trucks that spread from the back and require constant mirror checks, this spreader lets you boom in and out quickly with better visibility.

Ease of Use and Salt Savings
The totes are easy to fill and keep salt clean and dry. There’s no wasted salt. Salt savings are a huge deal in this industry, and this system helps you use only what you need, cutting down on extra c

Unlike truck salters that need to be emptied after every job, these totes can get refilled all season. Refill, spread when needed, and only need to clean out leftover salt at the end of winter.

You get faster, safer and more precise spreading, with less waste and less driving time.

HOW DOES THE SALT SPREADER COMPARE TO A SCOOP-AND-SPREAD SALTER?

Scoop-and-spread salters can be harder to fill and use. They typically only have one spinner and limited visibility while loading because you have to tip the bucket forward, making it tough to see how much salt you’re getting. It’s also harder to fill them completely. With totes, the wide-open top lets you see exactly how much salt is inside, so you can fill it 100% every time. Plus, our system uses dual spinners for better, wider spreading. Overall, it’s faster, easier, and more operator-friendly.
