Tine Grapple Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS A TWO-CYLINDER, INDEPENDENT SKID STEER GRAPPLE AND WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

This type of skid steer grapple has two individual jaws with separate cylinders. Each jaw works independently of the other. The hydraulic system allows operators to securely clamp debris that has uneven surfaces, while keeping consistent pressure on the entire load. Independent grapples keep oddly-sized objects tightly secured in the skid steer bucket during transport.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN AN OPEN (SKELETON) AND A SOLID BUCKET?

An open “skeleton” bottom has better visibility and allows smaller debris and dirt to sift through, leaving a cleaner load. These skid steer grapples will work well for most cleanup jobs. For tree work, a skeleton root type grapple will work best.

A solid bucket grapple will scoop material for complete removal. With a solid bucket there are no spaces for debris to fall through. These types of skid steer grapples are a great choice for recycling and scrap yard applications.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF OPEN/CLOSED SIDES?

Grapples with closed sides or side plates keep debris from spilling out, resulting in a cleaner work area. See the Virnig Skeleton Rock Grapple.

Grapples with open sides allow easy clamping of logs and piles of brush that are wider than the skid steer attachment. See the Virnig Skeleton Grapple.

WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF THE VIRNIG GRAPPLE BOLT-ON STEP?

Virnig utilizes a replaceable bolt-on step on all two-cylinder skid steer grapples. This step is made of durable, laser cut steel in an aggressive pattern that will grip in the worst conditions. Remove the step for easy access to hydraulic fittings for simplified repairs or efficient changes between plumbing options.

WHY DOES VIRNIG USE NITROSTEEL® CYLINDER RODS?

Virnig uses NitroSteel® cylinder rods because they are a superior performing alternative to chrome plating. The finish offers improved corrosion resistance and better grease retention.

Chrome plated cylinder rods can flake or pit and destroy the seals or other internal components; resulting in downtime and expensive repairs.

A NitroSteel® rod will perform better and increase the service life of a cylinder, making it the cost-effective choice. Learn more about the benefits of the NitroSteel® process.

ARE HOSES INCLUDED WITH THIS GRAPPLE?

The hoses, couplers*, cylinders, and fittings are included with all Virnig skid steer grapples.

*Couplers not included with Compact Tractor grapples.

WILL THE GRAPPLE’S HYDRAULIC PLUMBING FIT MY SKID STEER?

Virnig Manufacturing has done real world testing and research to determine the proper length and position of hydraulic hoses for a truly universal fit on any skid loader brand. We match our research with high quality hoses, properly sized couplers, and JIC (Joint Industry Council) flange fittings to prevent leaks.

WHAT GRAPPLE WIDTH SHOULD I PURCHASE?

Typically, the grapple bucket width should be larger than the width of the loader.

The material to be handled by the grapple also needs to be taken into account. For example, logs can be handled easier with a wider grapple whereas dense items like rocks may overload the machine when using a large grapple. To prevent potential overloading issues, compare the loader’s lifting capacity and tipping weight to the weight of the attachment plus the estimated weight of a load. Different materials will change the estimated weight of a load.

If you are unsure about what width to purchase, contact a local Virnig dealer or call Virnig at 800-648-2408.

WHY ORDER CYLINDER GUARDS?

Cylinder guards are inexpensive insurance against damage to the most crucial part of a skid steer grapple. They prevent damage in multiple ways; dirt and debris is blocked from the cylinder rods, hydraulic fittings are protected, heavy objects are deflected from falling on the cylinder, and they offer shielding on all four sides.

WHY CAN’T I INSTALL CYLINDER GUARDS ON THIS GRAPPLE WITH M-SERIES BOBCAT® LOADERS?

When the grapple jaw is opened the Cylinder Guard may interfere and damage the hydraulic connectors on M-Series Loaders. Without Cylinder Guards the cylinder will clear the hydraulic connectors. This is only applicable to the V50 Tine Fork Grapple (TBG) and the V60 Tine Fork Grapple (ITG).
